Tallahassee, Florida - March 17, 2011 --
Some members of the legislative black caucus are still upset over remarks Gov. Rick Scott made several weeks ago to the caucus about growing up poor “in the same situation as you guys.” The black sorority Alpha Kappa Alpha received an invite from First Lady Ann Scott to a mansion reception on Tuesday evening, said Rep. Geraldine Thompson, D-Orlando, a member of the sorority. “The organization opted instead to have the reception at City Hall because of the insensitivity shown to members of the black caucus when we met there for lunch,” Thompson said. She will be holding a press conference with Rep. Mia Jones, D-Jacksonville, on Wednesday to highlight issues that impact black Floridians, such as funding cuts to historically black colleges and universities.
