GAINESVILLE, Fla. — It’s no secret that media images of the “ideal” body type can lead women to be critical of their own bodies and can even contribute to eating disorders. However, with the start of National Eating Disorders Awareness Week today, a University of Florida researcher points to a study showing that African-American women are less susceptible to media-driven body dissatisfaction. While previous studies have shown the negative influence of thinner-than-average models on body image, the UF study by exercise psychologist Heather Hausenblas shows that race can have a moderating effect.
“We’re bombarded with media images of what’s considered ideal. We wanted to measure the influence of race on how that makes women feel about their bodies,” said Hausenblas, who co-authored the research with doctoral student Ninoska DeBraganza. “We know that African-American women report less body dissatisfaction overall than Caucasian women, who are the most affected of all ethnicities. But to my knowledge, no study on media influence had ever taken the ethnicity of the models into account.”
In the study, published in the March 2010 issue of the Journal of Black Studies, Hausenblas showed two sets of photographs to 31 Caucasian and 30 African-American undergraduate students. Both sets of slides showed images of white female models from magazines and catalogs.
One set represented the slender “media ideal,” while the other models’ figures were more representative of average build. After viewing the “ideal” slides, white women reported more body dissatisfaction than they had felt before viewing them. After white women viewed the “average” models, however, they felt better about their bodies. African-American women, in contrast, reported no change in their body satisfaction after viewing either set of slides.
The study used Caucasian models to reflect the majority of images in magazines and catalogs. The resulting impact on the white women’s body dissatisfaction may suggest that they were more inclined to compare themselves to the models than the African-American women were, Hausenblas said. Kevin Thompson, a psychology professor at the University of South Florida, said the study poses some intriguing questions.
“This innovative investigation suggests that one reason that African-American women have lower rates of body dissatisfaction is that they don’t compare themselves to Caucasian models or use them as a reference point for determining how they feel about their appearance,” he said. “If comparisons with same-ethnicity models are provided, African-American women might be affected in the same manner as Caucasian women. Or, if they continue to be unaffected, then it would be even more fascinating, suggesting a general strategy among African-American women of resisting the negative influences of unrealistic images of attractiveness as perpetuated by the media.”
Hausenblas would also like to study images portrayed in music videos, movies and television shows.
“What’s important is to find out the driving force behind body dissatisfaction. We don’t want to take a cookie-cutter approach and assume that media images affect all races equally.” Body dissatisfaction is the leading precursor to eating disorders, and understanding the factors that drive it could help in targeting effective treatments, Hausenblas said.
“We’re hoping to make people more aware that media images can have a negative effect, and not just generalize about it,” she said. “If we don’t know the effects of ethnicity, interventions for body dissatisfaction might not work.”

Fire marshals said the fire started around 6:40 p.m., when a woman visited a man in the building and paid him $300 to perform a voodoo ceremony to bring her good luck. The man was known in the neighborhood as a voodoo priest, the AP reported.
A city official told the AP that the ceremony involved the man and woman having sex in a bed surrounded by candles. Those candles set fire to the linens and clothes on the floor, the FDNY said. But instead of calling 911, the man conducting the ceremony tried in vain to douse the flames with water.
Then another person in the apartment opened a window and propped open the front door to in an attempt to vent the smoke, but instead wind gusts of "shot the flames back inside, creating a blowtorch effect as winds whipped in through the open window and pushed fire out into the hallway," according to an FDNY statement.
When the people in the apartment ran out, they left the door open, fire officials said. Flames quickly spread to the fourth, fifth and sixth floors, causing part of the roof and fourth floor to collapse, the FDNY said.
Mary Feagin, 64, who lived on the sixth floor, died in the fire, and at least 20 firefighters and three other people were hurt, the FDNY said.
Nearly 200 firefighters from 44 companies spent almost seven hours bringing the fire under control, the fire department said.

Cambridge Boston club fined, apologizes for discriminating against black Harvard students
A Boston nightclub has agreed to pay a fine, issue a public apology and have its staff attend anti-discrimination training for closing the club when a significant number of black attendees showed up, according to an agreement reached with Attorney General Martha Coakley and the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination.
The agreement was based on a complaint made by a group of black Harvard graduates who had organized an event at Cure Lounge as an after-party to the Harvard and Yale football game last November.
Approximately 400 tickets were purchased before the sold-out event. But about an hour after the 10 p.m. starting time, Cure Lounge abruptly ended the event and told all guests that they needed to leave. The vast majority of event guests who stood in line and who entered the club were black, according to the complaint.
Under the agreement, which states Cure Lounge violated state laws prohibiting public places from restricting entry or limiting use based on race, gender, or national origin, the nightclub must pay a $30,000 fine to the state.

“Massachusetts businesses cannot refuse to host events because of racial reasons,” Coakley said in a statement.
Coakley added, “in this case, club waitstaff made harmful and ill-conceived conclusions based on the simple fact that mot of the guests were black. This type of behavior is the essence of racial stereotyping and it is a reminder that, despite the many strides we have taken, there is still progress to be made.”

CBS & Warner Bros Pull The Plug: But Have We Seen The Last Of 'Two And A Half Men'?
UPDATE FRIDAY AM: Charlie Sheen's state of denial continues. This morning, he texted ABC News that he plans to show up for work on Tuesday as previously planned despite yesterday's decision by CBS and Two and a Half Men producer Warner Bros. to cancel the rest of the show's current eighth season. And he had more insults for Men creator Chuck Lorre whom he called a "clown" and "loser."
PREVIOUS THURSDAY PM: As Two And A Half Men star Charlie Sheen's erratic behavior escalated today in a series of verbal assaults on the show's co-creator-executive producer Chuck Lorre, the sitcom's network and studio did the only thing they could in the situation: pull the plug. But they only did it for this season. (Two and a Half Men was scheduled to resume production on Monday for 4 more episodes). So the door is left open for a possible ninth season. "Based on the totality of Charlie Sheen’s statements, conduct and condition, CBS and Warner Bros TV have decided to discontinue production of Two and a Half Men for the remainder of the season," the two companies said in a statement.
The question now is should Two And A Half Men continue? Could the damage done over the past few weeks ever be repaired. And most importantly, will Sheen come back from the brink?
The production shutdown decision was a dramatic ending to a really fascinating day in which Hollywood witnessed a star's self-destruction. First, in a bizarre rant with possible anti-Semitic overtones on The Alex Jones radio show this morning, Sheen called Lorre a "charlatan" and a "turd" and would only refer to him by his "real name, Chaim Levine." "Chaim, last time I checked, I spent close to the last decade effortlessly and magically converting your tin can into pure gold," said Sheen, responding to a tongue-in-cheek vanity card Lorre recently posted on Men that ended with "If Charlie Sheen outlives me, I'm gonna be really pissed."
Things escalated in the afternoon when Sheen, currently vacationing in the Bahamas with a model, ex-wife and a porn star, reached out to TMZ. "I violently hate Chaim Levine," Sheen said. "He's a stupid, stupid little man and a p**sy punk that I'd never want to be like. That's me being polite."
Lorre is said to be very upset by the insults hurled by Sheen who has had a huge career resurgence with Men and became TV's highest-paid star making more than $1.2 million an episode. Lorre was integrally involved, along with WBTV and CBS, in the decision not to resume production as planned, which was made in a series of meetings this afternoon precipitated by today's events. WBTV, which has lucrative syndication deals in place for Two and a Half Men, stands to lose tens of millions of dollars if the series doesn't continue. But that pales in comparison to the importance of Lorre to the studio. In addition to Two and a Half Men, he is also behind the WBTV's hit comedy The Big Bang Theory, which landed a massive syndication deal in May, and promising new comedy Mike & Molly.
Sheen's contract doesn't call for him to be paid for the unproduced episodes, though it is not clear if he would dispute that. And then there is the issue of the innocent bystanders -- the show's crew who face the possibility of no additional pay for this season. WBTV is expected to deal with this compensation issue next week.
It's been a rocky last year for Sheen on Two and a Half Men as the actor's addiction problems escalated. Last spring, the show shut down production for a month while Sheen was in rehab following his domestic violence arrest in Colorado the previous Christmas. He then announced he was ready to leave the hit sitcom at the end of his contract last May but was lured back at the last moment with a rich new two-year deal. Then came the New York hotel room incident and hospitalization in November, the January Las Vegas weekend binge and the 36-hour cocaine-and-booze bender at his house later that month, which sent him to the hospital and led to the current production hiatus.

In an open letter via TMZ, Sheen called Lorre a "s contaminated little maggot" and "earthworm." "I wish him nothing but pain in his silly travels." "I urge all my beautiful and loyal fans who embraced this show for almost a decade to walk with me side-by-side as we march up the steps of justice to right this unconscionable wrong," he said. Sheen has been vocal about his displeasure with WBTV and CBS' decision to shut down production on the show in January so he can undergo treatment and had hinted that he may take legal action. He previously retained leading Hollywood litigator Marty Singer and threatened to sue the studio if they stopped production without a cause.
Just how delusional is Sheen? He just told another online tabloid, Radar, that he was already "in serious negotiations with HBO to star in his own half-hour show. He even had a title for it, Sheen’s Corner, listed a sky-high salary for himself, $5 million an episode, and a 10-show guarantee. “It will be epic," Sheen said. The problem is that Sheen is under a deal at WBTV and there is no HBO show.
As for Sheen's current show, Two and a Half Men, the last produced episode aired last week. Lorre, CBS and WBTV have ruled out continuing the show without Sheen. So did we just see the series finale?

Kanye West took to Twitter to speak his mind about the hot button issue of abortion, and while not saying whether or not he thinks it should be legal, the rapper certainly took issue with some people who undergo the procedure.
"an abortion can cost a ballin' nigga up to 50gs maybe a 100. Gold diggin' bi**hes be getting pregnant on purpose. #STRAPUP my n**gas!" he recommended to his followers.
Just to be clear, though, Kanye hasn't had the problem himself. "It ain't happen to me but I know people," he clarified. Phew. Soon after that tweet, within the same hour, he added something a bit different to the conversation, tweeting simply "#LUXURYREALNESS."
Interestingly, on Tuesday he tweeted a picture of Justin Bieber, calling him his "new beat protege," a bit of an ironic turn given Bieber's own recent comments about abortion.

MediaTakeOut.com learned that yesterday, the NBA superstar and his legal team sprung into action - they've FROZEN all of his babys mother Royce's bank accounts. And they've sent the Marshall to her home - to seize her physical property (including her car).
How can he do this, you ask? Well according to MediaTakeOut.com's insider, Dwight had Royce sign an IRON CLAD confidentiality agreement. Under the agreement, Royce would get $500K (in addition to her child support) and she'd also get a MANSION. But in exchange for the LOOT, Royce could not BAD MOUTH Dwight ever. And she had to keep their son, Braylon, out of the limelight.
After Royce tweeted a number of recent PHOTOS, and started talking ish on Royce's show, the Basketball Wives - Dwight's legal team went on the attack. A few months ago they brought a LAWSUIT against Royce.
Dwight recently won a victory in court and, under the victory, he can SEIZE any of Royce's assets - except her house.

Justin Tennison Dies: 'Deadliest Catch' Crew Member Found Dead In Hotel
ANCHORAGE, Alaska — A member of the hit cable TV show "Deadliest Catch" fishing crew has been found dead in an Alaska motel room, police said Wednesday.
Justin Tennison, who worked on the Time Bandit, one of the vessels on the popular Discovery Channel reality series that depicts the crab fishing industry in the dangerous waters off Alaska, was found dead Tuesday afternoon in Homer, authorities said.
Beer, hard liquor and a small amount of marijuana were found in the room, Homer police Lt. Randy Rosencrans said. Police believe a party was held in the room on Monday night – two rooms were registered under Tennison's name and nearby guests complained about the noise.
The 33-year-old Tennison is set to make a posthumous debut in the series' seventh season, which is scheduled to begin in April, Discovery spokesman Josh Weinberg said.
"Justin was tough as a bull and was an all-around good hand," a statement posted on the Time Bandit's official website said.
Weinberg also released a statement, saying Discovery was saddened by the news.
"We send our sympathies to his entire family and fellow crew members during this most difficult time," the statement said.
TMZ previously reported that Tennison had died.
The cause of death was unknown Wednesday afternoon and foul play isn't suspected, Rosencrans said. An autopsy by the state medical examiner's office was scheduled to take place later Wednesday.
